WHAT
IS CDBG?
The Community
Development Block Grant Program (CDBG) is a federal program
that began operation in
1975. It is run by the US Department of Housing and Urban
Development (HUD).

WHO
GETS THIS MONEY?
Every year, each
city with more than 50,000 people and each county over 200,000 in
population get CDBG money
automatically. They are called, "entitlement
jurisdictions". The amount
each receives is set by a formula.

WHAT
IS THE PURPOSE OF CDBG?
In the law, Congress
declares that the primary objective of CDBG is to improve
communities by providing:

decent housing
- a
suitable living environment
-
expanding economic opportunities
all "principally for persons of
low and moderate income"

WHAT CAN CDBG BE USED FOR?
CDBG can be used for
just about anything a public official or developer wants or that
you want. Here is a partial
list of "eligible activities".

Housing rehabilitation

Housing construction only if done by a "community based development
organization"
-
Grants or loans to neighborhood groups; and technical assistance to
build their capacity to carry out neighborhood revitalization or
economic development

Public service
-
Construction or rehabilitation of shelters for homeless people, battered
spouses, etc

Making buildings accessible to handicapped people
-
Public works, such as streets, sidewalks and sewers
-
Construction or rehabilitation of parks and recreation facilities.

STATE HOUSING INITIATIVES
PARTNERSHIP
(SHIP)
The
City of Lauderhill’s State Housing Initiatives Partnership Program (SHIP)
provides financial assistance to first time homebuyers and rehabilitation
financial assistance to current homeowners.
Eligible first time homebuyers can receive a one-time loan for down
payment/closing cost assistance. The amount awarded cannot exceed a cumulative
total of twenty percent (20%) of the purchase price or $10,000.00, whichever is
less. The applicant is required to make a minimum contribution of two percent
(2%) of the home purchase price towards down payment/closing cost.
The prospective house may be a
new house, which is already built. The price cannot exceed $250,000.00 or it may
be an existing house with documented proof showing a minimum of $2,000 worth of
repairs made on the home within the past twelve- (12) months. The price of the
home cannot exceed $$250,000.00.
Current
eligible homeowners can receive a one time loan of up to $10,000 to assist with
repairs on their home. The repairs include doors, walls, plumbing, roofs,
windows, etc.
Eligibility in the program is based on household income.
