Commissioner Melissa P. Dunn, MBA was elected to the City of Lauderhill Commission in November 2020.

Commissioner Dunn’s professional and philanthropic experiences prior to becoming an elected official are extensive. She is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of MD Marketing Network. In addition, Commissioner Dunn served as the Lauderhill Regional Chamber of Commerce as President for two years. With a passion for mentorship, she founded the Hibiscus Girl’s Leadership Academy which empowers young women in Lauderhill to reach their highest God-given potential.  Furthermore, she hosts the DunnWisdom Morning Show helping others as a Certified Ontological and Mindfulness Coach.

As a seasoned a small business owner and community activist, Commissioner Dunn devotes her career to helping small businesses achieve economic literacy, stability, and prosperity.  She assists residents with  health and wellness education to elevate their quality of life. With a degree in Sociology from Judson College in Marion, AL, and an MBA and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt from Florida International University, Commissioner Dunn has managed her business under the philosophy that you can make money and do good!

Commissioner Dunn has been appointed to the National League of Cities Community and Economic Development Federal Advocacy Committee; the US Global Leadership Coalition’s Florida Advisory Committee; and the Small Business Anti-Displacement Network (SBAN) administered by the University of Maryland’s National Smart Growth Center for Research and Education.  She serves as co-chair of the Women’s Foundation of Florida’s Network of Elected Women in Broward County. Additionally, Commissioner Dunn is a member of the Broward Sierra Club, Florida League of Cities, Broward League of Cities and Broward Black Elected Officials and the American Diabetes Association of South Florida’s Community Leadership Board.

Since taking office in November 2020, Commissioner Dunn has:

  • Co-founded the Lauderhill Health and Prosperity Partnership that was funded $3.8 million to address COVID health literacy; 
  • Founded Lauderhill Shines Capacity Development Initiative which provides education, mentorship and access to Senior City Staff and Industry Professionals. Graduated 58 businesses (60% of whom are brand new business);
  • Sponsored an Ordinance banning single use plastics on City-owned property (passed unanimously);
  • Sponsored an Ordinance ensuring that Lauderhill businesses get access to local government bids and contracts.
  • Been appointed by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners to become a member of the Tourist Development Council (TDC) - an advisory board for Broward County;
  • Been appointed to the Board of Directors for the Florida Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials as Secretary;
  • Been appointed by the Florida League of Cities to the 2022-2023 FLC Legislative Policy Committee.
