The S.A.K.E. Awards was an idea created by Commissioner Hayward J. Benson, Jr. in 2008. Since then, it has been executed by the Parks and Recreation department annually. S.A.K.E. stands for Sports Advancing Kids Education. The program honors and recognizes student-athletes, coaches, teams, and volunteers for their exemplary achievements in seven areas. The vision is to build character, bolster self-esteem, enhance life skills, impart positive values, and advance education through athletic endeavors and competition.
Nominations are open to all participants in any City of Lauderhill youth sports or affiliated programs. The event is always a great time and is free to the public to attend.
As of 2022, 54 Scholar Athletes have been provided a total of $31,000 in scholarship money. Hundreds of other nominees and youth groups have been given awards and monetary support, and thousands of others have been positively affected by the program thanks to the kind generosity of our sponsors and the City of Lauderhill.
